Human Rights and Access to Justice

The project under the thematic areas is TURI ABAGACIRO With the support from Plan International Rwanda, AJPRODHO plays a crucial role in educating youth aged between 10 and 24  years old about Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). By equipping these youths with knowledge and skills

related to SRHR, AJPRODHO contributes to building a generation that is more conscious, responsible, and empowered.

This empowerment has positive ripple effects on communities and societies as a whole. We are convinced that teaching youth  about SRHR is a proactive and preventive measure that not only addresses immediate health concerns but also contributes to

building a society that values informed decision-making, equality, and overall well-being.

This year (2023-2024) AJPRODHO strives to towards having Children, Adolescents and Youth (CAY) have increased knowledge

and understanding on SRHR, including HIV, harmful practices and other forms of GBV-SRHR and Parents, primary caregivers

and other family members have a good understanding of CAY´s sexual and reproductive health and rights.this all is implemented in two Districts, Nyaruguru and Gastibo.

Our achievements (2022-2023)

In line with our mandate, to sensitize, advocate and promote awareness on Sexual Reproductive Health and Right among youth towards a peaceful society where there is youth participation for social justice and decent living conditions for all; in partnerships with Plan International Rwanda, we have been implementing the “TURI ABAGACIRO PROJECT” from October 2022 to date ; aiming

at Empowering Young girls and Women to take greater control of their Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Nyaruguru and you achieved so

far? Gatsibo Districts respectively. The project is being implemented in Munini, Muganza and Rusenge Sectors of Nyaruguru District and in 6 secondary Schools namely: GS Bunge, GS Cyuna, GS Kamana, GS Munini, GS Bigugu, and G.S Sekera. While in Gatsibo District. The project is being implemented in Murambi, Kiziguro and Rwimbogo Sectors and in GS Bunge, GS Cyuna, GS Kamana, GS Munini, GS

Bigugu, and G.S Sekera.

Over the last 18 mongths, we have been able to achieve key results to mention:

  • 150 adolescents sponsored girls aged 12 to 17 in holiday camps to increase their SRHR knowledge and build their confidence vis a vis the sexual decision making and GBV prevention,
  • 598 Males and 990 Females that make it 1,588 Beneficiaries already reached parents coaching program to take the lead in tackling and responding to SRHR issues.
  • 300 Girls and young women as direct beneficiaries were inspired through the inspirational talks including 4 PWDs
  • 662 People were reached during their parents coaching program in the community. 259 males, 403 females
  • 120 youth peer educators in the age range of 12-24 years from the community of Rusenge ,Muganza and Munini sectors and schools of Gs Bunge ,GS Muganza ,GS Cyuna ,GS Sekera,GS Munini and GS Kamana participated in age-appropriate dialogues with young people especially girls on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights and ASRH issues. 64 girls, 56 boys and 2 PWDs
  • 500 people including: Girls from the community and schools, adults people, parents, local government leaders, security personnel, to mention but few attended the End of February Umuganda Activity and deliver key messages to participants on Tuganire Mwana wanjye, SRHR and Gender equality.
  • 165 people received the CSE modules in Murambi, kiziguro and Rwimbogo Sectors
  • 30 teachers and religious leaders-training teachers and religious leaders on CSE and ASRH
  • 1082 youth attended open day in Gatsibo district including 11 PWDs.

The project has engaged with a total of 6,806 young individuals, comprising 2,764 males and 4,042 females.

 

KEY LEARNINGS

  • Interactive Learning Enhances Engagement: Interactive sessions, such as group discussions and role-play activities, notes, especially
  • Addressing Stigma and Taboos: Open discussions about sensitive topics like sexuality and reproductive health were crucial in breaking down stigmas and taboos.
  • Importance of Confidentiality and Trust: Creating a safe and confidential environment encouraged participants to ask questions and seek guidance without fear of judgment.
  • Empowering Youth Advocacy: The training empowered youth to advocate for their SRHR, reinforcing the need for continued support in their advocacy efforts.
  • Integration of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE): The inclusion of CSE components in the training enhanced participants’ understanding of healthy relationships and decision-making.
  • Peer Education and Support Networks: It is crucial fostering peer support systems to allow participants to continue learning and addressing SRHR concerns outside of formal training sessions.
  • Tailored Content: It is always of paramount importance to customize training materials and discussions to suit the age, educational level, and specific needs of participants.
